Why van MOT failures hit a business harder than a car MOT fail

When a personal car fails its MOT, it’s annoying. When a working van fails, it’s a vehicle off the road, a job that can’t be done, and possibly a driver with nothing to drive that day. Vans also face a slightly different MOT than cars in some respects, particularly around weight-related items and load-bearing components, so preparation deserves a bit more attention than simply assuming what worked for your own car will cover a commercial vehicle too.

The good news is that a large proportion of MOT failures come down to items that are cheap and quick to sort out beforehand, bulbs, wiper blades, fluid levels, rather than expensive structural problems. A bit of preparation in the days before the test can be the difference between a straightforward pass and a van sitting at the garage for a retest while you scramble to cover a job.

Lights, indicators and reflectors

Walk around the van with the engine running and check every bulb: headlights on both dip and full beam, sidelights, indicators front and back, brake lights, reverse light, fog light, and number plate light. Get someone to sit in the driver’s seat and operate each control while you check from outside.

Check for cracked or cloudy lenses too, since a light that technically works but doesn’t shine correctly through a damaged lens can still fail. Reflectors matter as well, both on the van itself and on any trailer if you’re testing one alongside it, and they’re easy to overlook because they don’t involve a bulb at all.

Check all tyres including any dual rear wheels, and look for uneven wear patterns that might point to an alignment or suspension issue worth having looked at before the test rather than after a fail.

Look closely for sidewall damage, bulges, cuts or cracking, since these are automatic fail items regardless of tread depth. Load area, racking and signage

This is where van MOTs diverge more from car MOTs. Testers check that racking, shelving and any fitted equipment in the load area is securely mounted rather than loose or liable to shift, since this affects vehicle safety in a way that’s specific to commercial use. Signage, ply lining, and roof racks also get checked to make sure nothing is loose, damaged, or obstructing lights or number plates.

If you’ve had any work done to the van’s load area, additional shelving fitted, a bulkhead installed, or racking changed, it’s worth giving it a proper shake test beforehand to check nothing has worked loose since it was fitted. Exhaust, emissions and the engine bay

Emissions testing varies by fuel type and engine age, but a poorly running engine, dirty air filter, or failing sensor can all push emissions readings out of range even on a vehicle that otherwise drives fine. If your van has felt sluggish, used more fuel than usual, or shown a warning light recently, it’s worth having a diagnostic check before the MOT rather than finding out about an emissions-related fault on the day.

Check the exhaust for obvious damage, holes, loose sections, or excessive corrosion, since these are straightforward visual fail points. Suspension and steering under load

Vans carrying regular heavy loads put more strain on suspension components than an equivalent car, and worn bushes, shocks or springs can show up as failures that wouldn’t necessarily appear on a lighter vehicle. Before the test, pay attention to how the van rides, excessive bouncing, clunking over bumps, or a vague feeling through the steering can all point to components worth checking before the test rather than during it.

Steering play, how much the wheel can move before the front wheels respond, is checked directly during the test and is a common fail point on higher-mileage vans. If the steering has felt looser than it used to, get it checked beforehand rather than hoping it scrapes through.

Ball joints and track rod ends wear faster under the additional stress of regular loads, so these are worth specific attention on a van that’s used for genuinely heavy or frequent carrying work.

Registration and documentation

Number plates need to be clean, correctly formatted, and securely fitted, front and back, with no missing or obscured characters. This sounds trivial but is a surprisingly common fail point, particularly on vans that pick up road grime quickly given how they’re used. A quick wipe down before the test avoids an unnecessary fail on something that takes thirty seconds to fix.

What to do if a fault turns up during preparation

Finding a fault during pre-MOT checks is a good outcome, not a bad one, since it gives you options you don’t have once the van has already failed officially.
