Engine and fuel-system repair

Fix rough running, leaks and loss of power properly

Misfires, hesitation, oil leaks and poor starting often share symptoms. A coil, plug, injector, air leak or sensor can all make an engine run badly, so the cause matters more than the most obvious part.

Straightforward ignition, belt, gasket and sensor jobs can often be completed at your address. Fuel-pressure, internal-engine and uncertain running faults should be tested before parts are selected.

Parts matched to the vehicle Established manufacturers, correct specification

When SSK supplies parts, the quote is prepared after the registration and job are checked. Exact brand and availability are confirmed before payment.

Choose by symptom

What is the engine doing?

These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.

Shaking or misfiring

Plugs and coils are common causes, but fuel, compression and air leaks can produce the same behaviour.

Diagnose the misfire

Oil around the top of the engine

A rocker-cover gasket or breather fault may leak onto the engine, but the source should be cleaned and confirmed.

Wrong fuel has gone in

Do not start or switch on the ignition. Moving the fuel through the system makes the repair larger.

Useful engine clues

Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.

  1. When cold and on level ground, check engine-oil level exactly as the handbook describes.
  2. Note whether rough running is cold-only, under load, at idle or after refuelling.
  3. Look underneath for fresh drips and note colour/location, but do not reach under an unsupported vehicle.

Mobile — at your address

Spark Plugs (4-Cylinder)

A full set of new spark plugs on a standard four-cylinder petrol engine. Worn plugs cause misfires, rough idling, poor fuel economy and a flashing engine light.

Wrong Fuel Removal (Misfuelled)

If you have put petrol in a diesel or diesel in a petrol, do not start the engine. Request an assessment so the required drain and fuel-system work can be confirmed.

Mobile — at your address

Ignition Coils (Full Set)

Replaces every ignition coil on the engine. Sensible when one has already failed on a high-mileage car, because the rest are the same age and usually follow within months.

Mobile — at your address

Ignition Coil (Single Cylinder)

Replaces one failed ignition coil, which is the cheapest fix for a misfire traced to a single cylinder. We confirm which cylinder with a scan before fitting anything.

Mobile — at your address

Fuel Injectors (Full Set)

Replaces all injectors and codes the new ones to the engine, which modern diesels require before they will run correctly. Book this after a leak-off test has confirmed the injectors are the problem.

Fuel Injector (Single)

Replaces one failed injector and codes it to the engine. Far cheaper than a full set, and the right choice when testing has isolated the fault to a single cylinder.

Fan Belt / Auxiliary Belt (Alternator Belt)

Replaces the ribbed belt on the front of the engine that drives your alternator, water pump, power steering and air-con. This is the belt people call the fan belt, and if it snaps you lose charging and often steering assistance immediately.

Glow Plugs (Full Set)

A full set of glow plugs for a diesel, which preheat the cylinders for cold starting. Book this if the car is hard to start on cold mornings, runs rough for the first minute or shows a coil-shaped warning light.

Engine & Fuel System FAQs

Does a misfire always mean spark plugs?

No. Ignition coils, injectors, wiring, vacuum leaks, compression and sensors can all cause a misfire. Testing avoids replacing good parts.

Can an oil leak be diagnosed from where it drips?

The drip point is only a clue because oil travels along covers and undertrays. The highest wet point, leak pattern and sometimes cleaning or dye testing identify the source.

What should I do after putting in the wrong fuel?

Do not start the engine or switch the ignition on. Move to safety without cycling the system if possible and arrange professional draining.

Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?

Many engine & fuel system jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.

What if I choose the wrong service?

If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.
