Find the play, stiffness or assistance fault
Wandering, stiffness, clunks and heavy steering can come from joints, tyres, alignment, hydraulic assistance or electric power steering. The right repair starts with separating them.
Track-rod and some hydraulic repairs can be mobile. Rack replacement, EPS faults and post-repair alignment may need workshop or diagnostic equipment.

When SSK supplies parts, the quote is prepared after the registration and job are checked. Exact brand and availability are confirmed before payment.
Brands shown are familiar manufacturer examples, not a guarantee that a particular brand fits every vehicle or an endorsement by its owner.
Describe the steering change
These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.
Wanders or feels loose
Track rods and joints may have play, while tyres and alignment can produce similar wandering.
View track-rod repairHeavy with a whine
Low hydraulic fluid, leaks or a failing pump are possible on hydraulic systems.
View steering-pump repairSteering warning and lost assistance
Electric systems need fault codes, power supply and mechanical resistance checked before a column or motor is ordered.
Diagnose steering assistanceSteering clues while parked
Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.
- Check tyre pressures against the vehicle label before judging steering weight or pull.
- Look for fluid below the front of the car and check the reservoir only if the handbook identifies one.
- Note whether stiffness is one direction, both directions, cold-only or linked to a warning light.

Track Rod End (Per Side)
Replaces the joint at the outer end of the steering, which is one of the most common MOT failures on the whole car. Wheel alignment is required afterwards and we will always tell you that up front.
Power Steering Pump
Replaces the hydraulic pump that provides steering assistance. The tell-tale sign is a whine that rises and falls with engine speed and heavy steering at parking speeds.
Track Rod, Inner (Per Side)
Replaces the inner track rod where it screws into the steering rack. Needs alignment afterwards, and often found at the same time as a worn outer end.
Steering Rack Gaiter Replacement (Per Side)
Replaces one split steering-rack bellows or gaiter before dirt and water damage the inner joint or rack seal. The track-rod end position is marked during removal, but a wheel-alignment check is still recommended afterwards.
Power Steering Rack
Replaces the steering rack itself at our garage, followed by a full four-wheel alignment. Book this for a rack that leaks fluid, knocks badly or has developed play that cannot be adjusted out.
Electric Power Steering Motor / Column
Replaces the electric steering assistance motor on a car that has no hydraulic pump. Symptoms are a steering warning light and steering that suddenly goes very heavy while driving.
Power Steering Fluid Reservoir
Replaces a cracked or split power steering reservoir. A cheap fix that is very often the real source of a leak wrongly blamed on the pump or the rack.
You do not need to diagnose the car yourself
If the symptom is unclear, intermittent or affects more than one system, choose our Find The Fault service. We investigate the cause, explain it in plain English and price the right repair before parts are ordered.
Steering FAQs
Why does my car pull to one side?
Tyre pressure or damage, alignment, braking, road camber and steering or suspension wear can all cause a pull. Checking tyres first avoids unnecessary parts.
Does electric power steering use fluid?
No. EPS uses an electric motor, though some electro-hydraulic systems still use fluid. Vehicle specification determines the system.
Do I need alignment after replacing a track rod end?
Yes, toe alignment should be set after disturbing a track rod or its adjustment so tyre wear and steering are corrected.
Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?
Many steering jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.
What if I choose the wrong service?
If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.
