Test the supply before replacing the battery
A flat battery can be the result, not the cause. Battery condition, charging output, starter draw and unwanted drain all need different fixes, while lighting and sensor faults may need coding or circuit checks.
We provide mobile jump starts, battery fitting and many electrical repairs. The correct battery technology and any required registration/coding are matched to the vehicle.

When SSK supplies parts, the quote is prepared after the registration and job are checked. Exact brand and availability are confirmed before payment.
Brands shown are familiar manufacturer examples, not a guarantee that a particular brand fits every vehicle or an endorsement by its owner.
What happens when you try to use the car?
These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.
Slow crank or repeated flat battery
Battery health and charging should be tested before deciding the battery itself has failed.
Book battery testingBattery light while driving
This often points to a charging-system fault. The car may stop when remaining battery energy is used.
View alternator repairOne click but no crank
Starter, battery, cable, relay and immobiliser issues can overlap and should be tested.
Book a non-start checkLow-risk electrical checks
Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.
- Note whether lights are dim, the engine cranks slowly, clicks once or does nothing.
- Check that battery terminals appear secure and free from obvious damage without placing tools across them.
- Test exterior lights with another person or a reflection, and note exactly which functions fail.

Jump Start & Battery Assist
We come to wherever the car is, get it started, and test on the spot whether the battery or the alternator is at fault. If you need a battery we can usually fit one during the same visit.
Car Battery Replacement (Standard)
A new standard lead-acid battery supplied and fitted at your address, with the old one taken away and recycled. The right type for most older cars that do not have stop-start.
Car Battery Replacement (EFB, Stop-Start)
An enhanced flooded battery for cars with stop-start, coded to the car so the charging system treats it as new. Fitting a plain battery to a stop-start car will kill it within months.
Car Battery Replacement (AGM, Premium Stop-Start)
An absorbent glass mat battery for cars with heavy electrical loads and stop-start, again coded to the car. Common on premium marques and on anything with a lot of on-board electronics.
Alternator Replacement
Replaces the alternator, which charges the battery while you drive. The classic sign is a battery warning light while driving, dimming headlights and a battery that goes flat again a day after being charged.
Starter Motor Replacement
Replaces the starter motor. Typical symptoms are a single loud click and no crank, an intermittent no-start that a jump pack does not fix, or a grinding noise as you turn the key.
Headlight Bulb Replacement
A new headlight bulb fitted at your address. Many modern cars need the wheel arch liner or the battery removing to reach the bulb, which is why it is not always the five-minute job people expect.
Brake Light Bulb Replacement
A new brake light bulb, which is an instant MOT failure if it is out and something you cannot check yourself from the driver's seat. We check all three brake lights while we are there.

Electrical, Battery & Lights FAQs
How do I know whether it is the battery or alternator?
A battery test checks stored capacity and starting performance; a charging test checks alternator output and ripple. Symptoms overlap, so voltage alone is not always enough.
Does a stop-start car need a special battery?
Usually yes. EFB or AGM batteries are specified according to the vehicle’s energy-management system, and some cars require battery registration after replacement.
Will a jump start fix a flat battery?
It may get the car running, but it does not explain why the battery discharged or confirm it will restart. Testing and charging may still be needed.
Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?
Many electrical, battery & lights jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.
What if I choose the wrong service?
If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.
