Dashboard light on?
We'll find it.
Professional OBD diagnostics, advanced multi-system scanning, Snap-On Modis — we read fault codes and fix the root cause on the same visit.
Fault finding that goes beyond reading a code
A fault code points to the system that noticed a problem; it does not automatically prove which part has failed. We combine scan data with physical checks and, where needed, live measurements or a road test.
Choose a warning-light scan when you mainly need stored codes read and explained. Choose Find The Fault for intermittent, multi-system or unclear problems where time is needed to isolate the root cause.

Start with the symptom you can observe
These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.
A warning light has appeared
A basic scan is a useful first step when the car still drives normally and one amber light has appeared.
Book a warning-light scanThe car will not start
Battery, starter, immobiliser, fuel and sensor faults can look alike. A non-start investigation tests the starting chain.
Book a non-start checkThe fault is intermittent or unclear
Repeated codes, several symptoms or a problem that comes and goes needs structured investigation rather than a code clear.
Book full fault findingCapture useful clues safely
Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.
- Photograph the warning light and any message before switching the ignition off.
- Write down when the fault happens: cold start, hot engine, braking, turning, rain or a particular speed.
- Do not clear codes or disconnect the battery before the visit; stored information can be valuable evidence.
Popular jobs explained in more detail
Use a focused page when you know the job, or choose fault checking when you only know the symptom.
Car won't start diagnosis
A symptom-led route through battery, starter, alternator and crank-but-no-start faults.
Read checks and bookYou do not need to diagnose the car yourself
If the symptom is unclear, intermittent or affects more than one system, choose our Find The Fault service. We investigate the cause, explain it in plain English and price the right repair before parts are ordered.
Diagnostics & Fault Finding FAQs
Will a diagnostic scan tell me exactly which part to replace?
Not always. A code identifies the circuit or condition detected. Wiring, connectors, mechanical faults and another component can trigger the same code, so test results must be interpreted before parts are replaced.
Can you diagnose a fault when no warning light is on?
Yes. Noises, leaks, vibration, poor starting and intermittent behaviour can be investigated using inspection, live data and targeted tests even when no dashboard lamp is present.
Should I clear the warning light before the appointment?
No. Clearing codes can remove freeze-frame data and useful history. Leave the stored information intact unless the handbook specifically instructs otherwise.
Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?
Many diagnostics & fault finding jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.
What if I choose the wrong service?
If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.

Diagnostics & Fault Finding 23 services
Free Vehicle Safety Check (With Paid Work)
A no-cost visual check of brakes, tyres, lights, fluid levels and battery health when added to paid work. A standalone mobile visit is charged at the minimum visit rate.
Warning Light Scan (Read The Fault Codes)
We plug into your car's diagnostic socket, read every stored fault code and tell you in plain English what has triggered the light. The right first step when a warning light appears and you do not know why.
Find The Fault (Our Full Investigation)
Our own step-by-step investigation for problems that do not show a clean fault code, combining scan data, physical testing and a road test. You get a written diagnosis and a fixed quote before any repair starts.
Car Won't Start (Investigation)
We come to where the car is and work through the three usual culprits in order: battery and charging, starting system, then fuel and ignition. You get a clear answer and a price before we go any further.
Advanced Multi-System Diagnostic
A deeper scan across every control module in the car, not just the engine, with live data recorded while the fault happens. Use this when a basic scan came back clean but the problem is still there.
Find A Noise (Knock, Whine, Grinding)
Road test and inspection to pin down where a noise is actually coming from, because a hum from a wheel bearing and a hum from a tyre sound almost identical. We tell you the part, not just the area.
Find A Leak (Something Dripping)
A puddle under the car could be oil, coolant, brake fluid, fuel or just air-con condensation, and they are wildly different repairs. We identify the fluid, trace it to its source and price the fix.
Airbag / SRS Warning Light Inspection
An airbag light is an automatic MOT failure and means your airbags may not deploy in a crash. We read the SRS-specific codes, find the fault and tell you exactly what needs replacing.
Used Car Pre-Purchase Inspection
We inspect a car you are thinking of buying, at the seller's address, before you hand over any money. Covers mechanical condition, fault codes, accident-damage signs, service history and a road test.
Full 50-Point Health Check
A structured 50-point inspection of every major system with a written, photographed report. Popular before a long trip, before selling, or when you have just bought a car and want to know where you stand.
Battery & Charging System Check
Tests the battery under load and checks that the alternator is actually charging it, which are two different faults with two different prices. Stops you buying a battery when the alternator is the problem.
Advanced Diagnostic Scan (Snap-On)
A broader diagnostic scan intended to inspect additional vehicle systems and live data where the selected vehicle and available equipment support it.
Driver Assist Sensor Calibration (ADAS)
Cameras and radar for lane assist, adaptive cruise and automatic braking must be recalibrated after a windscreen change, an alignment or a front-end repair, and this is done at our garage on a calibration rig. Skipping it leaves safety systems aiming at the wrong place.
New Part Coding & Programming
Many replacement parts have to be electronically introduced to the car before they work, including batteries, injectors, DPFs, throttle bodies and body modules. Book this if you or another garage fitted a part and the car has not accepted it.
Head Gasket Test (Sniff Test)
A chemical test of the coolant for combustion gases, which confirms or rules out a blown head gasket before you commit to a very expensive repair. Book this if you have white smoke, mayonnaise under the oil cap or coolant disappearing.
Diesel Injector Leak-Off Test
Measures how much fuel each injector returns to the tank, which identifies exactly which injector is failing rather than replacing all four. Book this for a rough-running, hard-starting or smoky diesel.
Cooling System Pressure Test
Pressurises the cooling system cold to find exactly where coolant is escaping, including leaks too small to see when hot. The right first step for a car that keeps needing coolant with no obvious puddle.
ECU Repair / Reprogramming
Where diagnostics point to the engine control unit itself rather than a sensor, we arrange repair or reprogramming of the unit. This is the endpoint after a diagnostic has ruled out the cheaper causes.
Gearbox Diagnostic (Electronic)
Reads the transmission control module, adaptation values and clutch wear data on an automatic or dual-clutch gearbox. Tells you whether a harsh or slipping change is electronic, fluid-related or mechanical.
Service Light Reset
Reset the service interval or oil-life indicator after work has been carried out. This clears the reminder only, it does not clear a genuine fault, and we will tell you if what you actually have is a fault.
Key & Alarm System Check
Diagnoses immobiliser, alarm and remote-locking faults, including keys that have lost sync and cars that alarm for no reason. Tells you whether you need a repair, a re-sync or a new key.
12V Battery Check (Hybrid & Electric)
Hybrids and EVs still have a small 12V battery, and when it fails the car will not wake up even though the main drive battery is full. A very common and very cheap fix that is often misdiagnosed as a major fault.
Gearbox Relearn & Adaptation Reset
Resets an automatic gearbox's learned shift pressures and timings back to factory, then completes the drive cycle that teaches it again. Often fixes harsh or hunting changes after a fluid change or battery replacement.
