Cabin comfort and engine cooling

Know whether you need a regas, leak test or cooling repair

Weak air conditioning is not always “low gas”, and overheating is never just a comfort problem. We separate refrigerant, airflow, electrical and engine-coolant faults before recommending work.

Regas and performance checks can often come to you. Leaks, compressor work and engine-cooling faults may need targeted testing or workshop equipment.

Parts matched to the vehicle Established manufacturers, correct specification

When SSK supplies parts, the quote is prepared after the registration and job are checked. Exact brand and availability are confirmed before payment.

Choose by symptom

Which temperature or airflow problem fits?

These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.

Air is cool but not cold

Refrigerant quantity is one possibility, but temperature, pressure and vent output should be checked.

Start with an air-con check

Temperature rises or coolant drops

Leaks, circulation, thermostat, fan and head-gasket faults can overlap. Pressure testing is the safer first step.

Checks with the car cool and parked

Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.

  1. With the engine fully cold, check coolant level only as the handbook instructs.
  2. Compare airflow at each fan speed and note whether temperature changes when driving.
  3. Look for damp carpet, sweet smells or visible drips without opening a hot pressure cap.

Free Air Con Performance Check (With Paid Work)

Added to paid work at no cost, we measure vent temperature and system pressure to identify whether you need a regas or leak test. A standalone mobile visit is charged at the minimum visit rate.

Air Con Regas (R134a, Cars Before 2015)

Recharges the air conditioning on cars built before around 2015, which use R134a gas. If you are not sure which gas your car takes, book the free performance check and we will identify it for you.

Air Con Regas (R1234yf, Cars From 2017)

Recharges the air conditioning on cars built from around 2017, which use the newer R1234yf gas. This gas costs considerably more than the older type, which is why it is priced separately.

Air Con Leak Test

If your air con went cold again for only a few weeks after a regas, you have a leak and another regas is money thrown away. We trace it with UV dye or nitrogen and tell you what it will cost to fix.

Air Con Antibacterial Clean (Smelly Vents)

Kills the bacteria and mould growing on the evaporator behind your dashboard, which is what causes that damp, sweaty-sock smell when you turn the fan on. Nothing to do with how cold the air con gets.

Water Pump & Thermostat

Replaces the water pump and thermostat together, which is standard practice because they are usually accessed at the same time. If your engine is belt-driven at the pump, book the cambelt and water pump job instead so you do not pay the labour twice.

Mobile — at your address

Auxiliary Water Pump Replacement

Replaces the small electric coolant pump used for cabin heat, turbo cooling or a separate hybrid cooling circuit. This is not the belt-driven main engine water pump; the registration and fault details let us identify the correct circuit and part.

Heater Blower Resistor (Only Works On Full)

Replaces the resistor pack that controls fan speeds. The giveaway symptom is a fan that works only on the highest setting and does nothing on 1, 2 and 3, and it is a cheap fix.

You do not need to diagnose the car yourself

If the symptom is unclear, intermittent or affects more than one system, choose our Find The Fault service. We investigate the cause, explain it in plain English and price the right repair before parts are ordered.

Air-Con, Heating & Cooling FAQs

Does weak air conditioning always need a regas?

No. Low refrigerant is common, but leaks, pressure sensors, fans, compressors, blend doors and electrical faults can also reduce cooling.

Which air-con gas does my car use?

The under-bonnet label usually identifies R134a or R1234yf and the charge quantity. Vehicle age is only a guide, so the label or vehicle data should decide.

Can I drive when the engine is overheating?

No. Continuing can cause severe engine damage. Stop safely, switch off and allow the system to cool without opening the pressure cap.

Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?

Many air-con, heating & cooling jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.

What if I choose the wrong service?

If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.
