Workshop-led engine work

Plan major engine work around evidence, not fear

Timing, turbo and head-gasket jobs are significant repairs. We confirm the failure, check connected damage and explain whether repair, replacement or further testing is the sensible route.

These jobs normally need controlled workshop equipment and careful timing or measurement. Collection can be arranged where the catalogue marks the service as workshop-only.

High-cost engine work should follow confirmed test evidence.

When a major repair may be involved

These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.

The cambelt interval is due

Preventative replacement follows the manufacturer’s age and mileage limit; the water pump is often sensible while access is shared.

Rattle at cold start

Timing-chain wear is one possibility, but pulleys, tensioners and other components can rattle too.

Smoke and loss of boost

Turbo failure is possible, but boost leaks, sensors and oil-control faults should be checked before replacement.

Prepare for an accurate assessment

Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.

  1. Check the handbook or service record for the timing-belt interval and last replacement evidence.
  2. Record when smoke appears and its colour, without repeatedly revving the engine.
  3. Note coolant or oil use and photograph contamination, but never open a hot cooling system.

Cambelt & Water Pump (Recommended Combination)

Cambelt, tensioner, idlers and water pump replaced together at our garage. On most engines the water pump is driven by the cambelt and sits behind it, so doing them together saves you paying the same four hours of labour twice, and this is the combination we recommend for almost every car.

Cambelt (Timing Belt) Change

Cambelt, tensioner and idler pulleys replaced at our garage. Choose this only if your water pump is not driven by the cambelt, and if you are not sure, choose the cambelt and water pump job instead. A snapped cambelt usually destroys the engine.

Workshop — collection available

Turbocharger Replacement

Replaces a failed turbocharger at our garage, including the oil feed and return pipes, which must be renewed or the new turbo will fail the same way. Symptoms are a loss of power, a whistling or siren noise, blue smoke and heavy oil use.

Timing Chain Replacement

Replaces a stretched timing chain, its guides and tensioner at our garage. Book this if you have a rattle from the front of the engine for a few seconds on a cold start, which is the classic warning sign.

Workshop — collection available

Cylinder Head Gasket (4-Cylinder)

A full head gasket replacement at our garage, including skimming and pressure-testing the cylinder head. Always confirm with the sniff test first, because this is one of the most expensive repairs on the car.

Workshop — collection available

High-Pressure Fuel Pump

Replaces the high-pressure pump on a common-rail diesel at our garage, and flushes the system if the pump has broken up internally. A failed HPFP typically means no start at all and metal debris through the fuel system.

Engine Replacement Or Rebuild

Replacement with a reconditioned or used engine, or a full rebuild of yours, carried out at our garage. We will always price this against the car's market value first and tell you honestly if it is not worth doing.

You do not need to diagnose the car yourself

If the symptom is unclear, intermittent or affects more than one system, choose our Find The Fault service. We investigate the cause, explain it in plain English and price the right repair before parts are ordered.

Major Engine Work FAQs

Should the water pump be changed with the cambelt?

Often yes when the pump is driven by the belt or access overlaps substantially. The exact recommendation depends on the engine design and manufacturer schedule.

Does white smoke prove the head gasket has failed?

No. Condensation, unburnt fuel, coolant ingress and other faults can look similar. Cooling-system, combustion-gas and compression evidence should support the diagnosis.

Can major engine repairs be done on my driveway?

Most require workshop lifting, timing, cleaning and measurement controls. SSK identifies the route during booking and can arrange collection where offered.

Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?

Many major engine work jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.

What if I choose the wrong service?

If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.
