Deal with a split boot before it becomes a failed joint
Clicking on lock, vibration under acceleration and grease around a wheel point to different parts of the driveline. Catching a damaged CV boot early can protect the joint inside.
CV boots, joints, shafts and some seals can be replaced mobile. Propshaft and bearing work depends on access and vehicle layout.
When SSK supplies parts, the quote is prepared after the registration and job are checked. Exact brand and availability are confirmed before payment.
Brands shown are familiar manufacturer examples, not a guarantee that a particular brand fits every vehicle or an endorsement by its owner.
When does the driveline noise happen?
These signs narrow down the sensible first step. They are not a diagnosis: two faults can feel very similar from the driver’s seat.
Clicking on full steering lock
A worn outer CV joint commonly clicks during tight turns under power.
View outer CV joint repairGrease thrown inside the wheel
A split outer boot can release grease and admit grit before the joint starts clicking.
Book a CV bootVibration under acceleration
Inner joints, shafts, mounts and wheel issues can overlap, so confirmation is important.
Investigate the vibrationLook and listen without lifting the car
Only make checks that your vehicle handbook permits, with the car safely parked, switched off and cool where relevant.
- With the car parked, look for grease around the inner wheel and visible rubber boot splits.
- Note whether clicking is worse turning left or right and only while accelerating.
- Record whether vibration follows road speed, engine speed or power application.

Outer CV Joint (Per Side)
Replaces the constant velocity joint at the wheel end of the driveshaft. The unmistakable symptom is a rhythmic clicking or knocking on full lock, most obvious when turning slowly into a parking space.
CV Boot / Gaiter, Outer (Per Side)
Replaces the split rubber boot that keeps grease in and grit out of the CV joint. A split boot is an MOT advisory, and dealing with it quickly saves the far more expensive joint behind it.
Front Driveshaft (Per Side)
Replaces a complete front driveshaft. Usually chosen over a joint repair when the shaft is badly worn at both ends, or when a reconditioned complete shaft costs little more than the joints.
CV Boot / Gaiter, Inner (Per Side)
Replaces the inner gaiter at the gearbox end of the driveshaft, which is more awkward to reach than the outer one. Same job in principle, more labour in practice.
Rear Driveshaft (Per Side)
Replaces a complete rear driveshaft on a rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive car. Same job as the front, different end of the car.
Driveshaft Oil Seal (Per Side)
Replaces the seal where the driveshaft enters the gearbox or differential. Book this if you have gearbox oil weeping from behind a driveshaft rather than from the sump.
Driveshaft Centre Support Bearing
Replaces the support bearing that carries a two-piece driveshaft on front-wheel-drive cars. Symptoms are a vibration or rumble that appears at a particular speed and a clonk when pulling away.
Propshaft Centre Bearing (Rear Wheel Drive / 4x4)
Replaces the centre bearing that supports the propshaft on rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, done on a ramp at our garage. Symptoms are a vibration through the floor and a heavy clunk when taking up drive.
You do not need to diagnose the car yourself
If the symptom is unclear, intermittent or affects more than one system, choose our Find The Fault service. We investigate the cause, explain it in plain English and price the right repair before parts are ordered.
Driveshafts & CV Joints FAQs
Can I replace only the CV boot?
Yes if the joint is still clean, correctly lubricated and undamaged. Once it clicks or has run contaminated, joint or shaft replacement may be more sensible.
Which side is faulty when it clicks on a turn?
Turn direction is a clue but not proof because sound travels and load changes across both shafts. Inspection confirms the side.
Is a driveshaft vibration the same as wheel imbalance?
No, but they can feel similar. Driveshaft or inner-joint vibration often changes with acceleration, while wheel imbalance more often follows road speed.
Can SSK Mechanics do this at my home or workplace?
Many driveshafts & cv joints jobs are mobile. Services needing a vehicle lift, controlled workshop equipment or high-voltage isolation are marked as workshop jobs; where available, SSK arranges collection and return.
What if I choose the wrong service?
If you cannot confidently match the symptom to a job, choose Find The Fault instead. The technician investigates the cause and explains the correct repair before parts are ordered, helping you avoid paying for a guessed part.
