Unsure whether it will pass this year
Choose the Pre-MOT Inspection first. The written report separates what genuinely needs fixing from what does not, before the DVSA test fee is committed.
A dashboard warning light is already on
Some warning lights, such as ABS, airbag or brake, correspond directly to automatic MOT failure items. A diagnostic check before the test avoids an avoidable fail.
Service and MOT are both due close together

Safe pre-checks you can do
Only make checks permitted by the vehicle handbook, with the car safely parked and switched off where relevant.
- Ask someone to confirm all exterior lights and indicators work before the test date.
- Check tyre tread depth is above the legal 1.6mm minimum across the central three-quarters of the tyre, with no cuts or bulges.
- Top up washer fluid and check the wipers clear the screen fully without smearing or catching.
- Confirm the number plate is clean, secure and legible, front and back.
- Note down any dashboard warning lights that are already on so they can be mentioned when booking.
