Where it gets Subaru-specific is the transmission. A lot of Foresters, XVs and Outbacks from the 2010s onward use Subaru's Lineartronic CVT automatic gearbox. A CVT is not the same as a conventional automatic, and it should never be serviced like one. It needs its own fluid, changed on its own interval, separate entirely from the engine oil service. Treat a Lineartronic CVT like a "fill for life" box and you're gambling with judder, harsh shifting and, eventually, a very expensive gearbox failure. We service CVT-equipped Subarus on the transmission's own schedule, not the engine's.

Timing belt intervals are another area where Subaru specifics matter. Older EJ-series boxer petrol engines - the ones fitted through the 1990s and 2000s in the Impreza, Forester, Legacy and Outback - are interference engines running on a timing belt rather than a chain. Historically that belt was specified for replacement around the 105,000-mile mark. If it snaps or has stretched badly and jumps time, the pistons meet the valves and you're looking at a rebuilt or replaced engine, not a quick fix. On any used Subaru of this era, the first thing we check is whether the belt has actually been done, and when. Newer FB-series engines moved to a chain, which changes the maintenance picture entirely - so the right advice always depends on which engine is actually in front of us, not a blanket rule for "all Subarus."

If you're running an older Impreza, Legacy, Forester or Outback with the 2.5-litre EJ25 boxer engine, head gasket failure is a well-documented weak point. Early versions used a single-layer gasket design that Subaru later superseded with a stronger Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) gasket, but plenty of these engines are still on the road with the original design or a like-for-like replacement. The tell-tale signs are external oil or coolant seepage around the block, or coolant that keeps disappearing without an obvious external leak. First-generation Foresters from 1997 to 2002 were particularly prone to this before Subaru revised the design from around 2003 - though some risk carried on even into later single-layer-gasket engines. If your Subaru is topping up coolant more often than it should, it's worth getting checked before it turns into a bigger repair.

If you've got a Euro-market diesel Forester, Legacy, Outback or Impreza from around 2008 onwards, it's likely running the EE20 turbodiesel - an engine that was never sold in the US or Japan, which is why so much generic "Subaru reliability" advice online simply doesn't mention it. Early EE20 units had a documented crankshaft failure risk linked to cracking during cold-climate, cold-start operation, which is about as relevant to a West Yorkshire winter as it gets. Subaru addressed this with revised Euro 5 versions of the engine, but on an older example it's a genuine issue worth flagging and monitoring, not something to dismiss because it doesn't show up in American forum threads.

A smaller but real point worth knowing: power steering rack corrosion has been documented as a warranty concern on some model years in salt-heavy regions - and if there's one thing West Yorkshire winters guarantee, it's road salt. If your steering feels notchy, heavier than it should be in one direction, or you notice fluid staining near the rack, get it looked at.

Brakes, clutch and the everyday stuff

Away from the Subaru-specific quirks, the everyday wear items still need proper attention. AWD adds a bit of extra consideration to brake work - because all four wheels are always doing some work, wear patterns can differ slightly from a two-wheel-drive car, and we check all four corners rather than assuming the fronts are doing all the work like they would on a front-wheel-drive hatchback.

Batteries, starting and electrical faults don't discriminate by brand, but AWD systems, EyeSight cameras and the sensors that support them all draw on the electrical system, so a tired battery or a charging fault can show up as odd behaviour in systems that have nothing obviously to do with starting the engine.
