Ask most drivers what an MOT actually tests and you will get a vague answer along the lines of “brakes and tyres, I think.” That answer isn’t wrong, but it leaves out a surprisingly long list of things a tester genuinely has to check, and it misses the equally important list of things they don’t. Knowing exactly what falls inside and outside the test changes how you read a pass certificate, and it changes what you should be checking yourself before you ever get to the test centre.

The MOT is a standardised inspection defined by the DVSA, and every test centre in the country, whether it’s a huge dealership or a small independent garage, works from the same manual. That consistency is the whole point of the test. A car that passes in Bradford should meet exactly the same standard as one that passes in Brighton. Lights and signalling

Every external light on the car is checked: headlights, sidelights, indicators, hazard lights, brake lights, fog lights, reversing lights, and the number plate light. Testers check that each one works, is the correct colour, isn’t obscured or damaged, and in the case of headlights, is correctly aligned so it doesn’t dazzle oncoming traffic. Brakes

Brake fluid condition also plays into this category indirectly. Doors need to open and close securely, including from the inside. The boot or tailgate is checked too.
