Diagnostics & Fault Finding
Modern vehicles contain 30-100+ electronic control units (ECUs) that communicate via a CAN bus network. Diagnostic equipment reads fault codes from these systems to identify problems.
Components
The diagnostics & fault finding consists of: OBD-II port, engine ECU, transmission ECU, ABS module, airbag module, body control module, instrument cluster, TPMS sensors, ADAS modules, key programming.
Petrol & diesel vehicles
All vehicles manufactured after 2001 (petrol) and 2004 (diesel) have OBD-II diagnostic ports. Manufacturer-specific scan tools access deeper system data.
Hybrid & electric vehicles
Electric vehicles have additional diagnostic systems for the battery management system (BMS), inverter, and electric motor. These require specialist EV-capable scan tools.
Common faults
The most common diagnostics & fault finding faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: engine warning light, ABS light, airbag light, traction control light, any dashboard warning, intermittent electrical issues, poor performance without obvious cause.
