Clutch
The clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox, allowing you to change gears smoothly. It consists of a friction plate, pressure plate, and release bearing.
Components
The clutch consists of: clutch friction disc, pressure plate, release bearing (throwout bearing), clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, dual-mass flywheel (DMF), clutch cable or hydraulic line.
Petrol & diesel vehicles
Clutch systems are identical across petrol and diesel vehicles, though diesel vehicles tend to wear clutches faster due to higher torque.
Hybrid & electric vehicles
Fully electric vehicles do not have a clutch. Hybrid vehicles with a manual gearbox have a conventional clutch that may need replacement.
Common faults
The most common clutch faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: clutch slipping (engine revs rise but car doesn't accelerate), heavy or stiff clutch pedal, clutch judder on take-off, difficulty selecting gears, burning smell, clutch pedal stays on floor.
If you notice any of these symptoms, book a diagnostic session or call us on 01274 442192.
