It is one of the few components on a modern vehicle whose entire purpose is not to make the car go, stop, or steer, but to clean up the exhaust before it leaves the tailpipe. What a catalytic converter actually does

Inside the stainless steel casing sits a ceramic honeycomb coated in a thin layer of precious metals, usually platinum, palladium and rhodium. As hot exhaust gases pass through this honeycomb, the coating triggers chemical reactions that convert harmful pollutants into less harmful ones. Carbon monoxide becomes carbon dioxide, unburnt hydrocarbons are burned off, and nitrogen oxides are broken down into nitrogen and oxygen. None of this happens instantly from a cold start, which is why catalytic converters need to reach a working temperature of around 300 to 400 degrees Celsius before they do their job properly. That is also why short journeys are particularly hard on them, since the converter barely gets warm before the engine is switched off again. Every petrol car sold in the UK for decades has had one fitted, and diesels use a similar device alongside their diesel particulate filter and, on newer vehicles, an AdBlue system. The most common reasons they fail

Catalytic converters rarely fail on their own without a cause. A converter that is disintegrating internally can also send ceramic debris further down the exhaust system, potentially damaging the oxygen sensors or the exhaust back box. Preventing premature catalytic converter failure

Regular servicing genuinely helps here, since a well tuned engine that is not misfiring or burning oil is unlikely to damage its converter prematurely. Addressing a check engine light promptly rather than ignoring it for months stops a small misfire from becoming a melted honeycomb. Using good quality fuel from reputable stations, keeping oil levels topped up and changed on schedule, and having spark plugs and ignition coils replaced at the recommended intervals all reduce the risk of contamination.
