Components

The electrical system consists of: battery (12V lead-acid or AGM), alternator, starter motor, fuse box, wiring loom, ECUs, sensors, switches, lighting (headlights, indicators, tail lights), horn, windscreen wipers.

Petrol & diesel vehicles

Conventional vehicles use a 12V electrical system powered by the alternator when the engine is running and the battery when stationary.

Hybrid & electric vehicles

Electric vehicles have both a high-voltage system (300-800V for the drivetrain) and a conventional 12V system for accessories. Only qualified EV technicians should work on the high-voltage system.

Common faults

The most common electrical system faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: battery not holding charge, slow cranking, alternator warning light, blown fuses, intermittent electrical faults, parasitic battery drain, faulty sensors, non-working lights.

If you notice any of these symptoms, book a diagnostic session or call us on 01274 442192.
