Driveshaft & CV Joints

Driveshafts transfer power from the gearbox to the wheels. CV (constant velocity) joints at each end allow the shaft to flex as the suspension moves and the wheels turn.

Components

The driveshaft & cv joints consists of: driveshaft, inner CV joint, outer CV joint, CV boot (gaiter), CV joint grease, centre bearing (if applicable).

Petrol & diesel vehicles

Front-wheel-drive vehicles have two front driveshafts. Rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive vehicles have a propshaft and rear driveshafts too.

Hybrid & electric vehicles

Electric vehicles with in-wheel or axle-mounted motors still use driveshafts and CV joints. The higher instant torque from electric motors can accelerate CV joint wear.

Common faults

The most common driveshaft & cv joints faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: clicking or knocking noise on turns (outer CV), vibration at speed (inner CV or centre bearing), grease on inner wheel arch (split CV boot), clunking on acceleration.

If you notice any of these symptoms, book a diagnostic session or call us on 01274 442192.
