Braking System
The braking system is your car's most critical safety feature. It converts kinetic energy into heat through friction, slowing and stopping your vehicle.
Components
The braking system consists of: brake pads, brake discs (rotors), brake calipers, brake fluid, brake lines, ABS sensors, ABS pump/module, handbrake cables, brake master cylinder, brake servo (booster).
Petrol & diesel vehicles
Identical braking systems across petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles. The only difference is that hybrids and EVs use regenerative braking which reduces pad and disc wear significantly.
Hybrid & electric vehicles
Electric vehicles use regenerative braking which captures energy during deceleration. This means brake pads and discs last 2-3 times longer than on conventional cars. However, brake fluid still needs changing every 2 years as it absorbs moisture regardless of mileage.
Common faults
The most common braking system faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: squealing or grinding noise when braking, pulsating brake pedal, car pulling to one side under braking, soft or spongy brake pedal, ABS warning light, handbrake not holding, increased stopping distance.
If you notice any of these symptoms, book a diagnostic session or call us on 01274 442192.
