Steering
The steering system translates your input at the steering wheel into movement at the front wheels. Modern cars use either hydraulic or electric power steering assistance.
Components
The steering consists of: steering rack, track rod ends (tie rods), track rods, power steering pump (hydraulic), power steering fluid, electric power steering motor (EPS), steering column, universal joints.
Petrol & diesel vehicles
Older vehicles use hydraulic power steering with a belt-driven pump. Most modern vehicles (2010+) use electric power steering which requires no fluid and has fewer components to fail.
Hybrid & electric vehicles
All modern EVs use electric power steering (EPS). No hydraulic components, no fluid leaks. The only common fault is the EPS motor or its control module.
Common faults
The most common steering faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: heavy steering, steering wheel vibration at speed, knocking when turning, power steering warning light, steering fluid leak (hydraulic), wandering or vague steering.
