Vehicle Systems Guide

Cooling & HVAC

The cooling system maintains the engine at its optimal operating temperature (85-95°C). It circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, and radiator.

Components

The cooling & hvac consists of: radiator, water pump, thermostat, coolant hoses, expansion tank, coolant temperature sensor, cooling fan, heater matrix, cabin air filter, AC compressor, AC condenser.

Petrol & diesel vehicles

Cooling systems are fundamentally the same across petrol and diesel engines. Diesel engines typically run at slightly lower temperatures.

Hybrid & electric vehicles

Electric vehicles still have a cooling system — for the battery pack and electric motor. Battery thermal management is critical for EV longevity. Some EVs use heat pumps for cabin heating instead of a heater matrix.

Common faults

The most common cooling & hvac faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: engine overheating, coolant loss, heater not blowing hot air, AC not cold, coolant temperature warning light, visible coolant leak, sweet smell from engine bay.

If you notice any of these symptoms, book a diagnostic session or call us on 01274 442192.
