Fuel System
The fuel system stores, filters, and delivers fuel from the tank to the engine at the correct pressure and volume. Modern fuel injection systems are electronically controlled for precision.
Components
The fuel system consists of: fuel tank, fuel pump (in-tank), fuel filter, fuel injectors, fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, fuel lines, fuel filler cap, evaporative emission system (EVAP).
Petrol & diesel vehicles
Petrol engines use port injection or direct injection (GDI). Direct injection operates at much higher pressure (150-200 bar) and injectors are more expensive to replace.
Hybrid & electric vehicles
Fully electric vehicles have no fuel system. Plug-in hybrids have a conventional fuel system plus a charging port.
Common faults
The most common fuel system faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: engine misfiring, poor fuel economy, difficulty starting, fuel smell, fuel leak, engine warning light, rough running, loss of power under acceleration.
