Turbocharger
A turbocharger forces more air into the engine using exhaust gas energy, increasing power output by 30-50% without increasing engine size. Most modern diesels and many petrol engines are turbocharged.
Components
The turbocharger consists of: turbocharger, wastegate, boost control solenoid, intercooler, boost pipes, oil feed pipe, oil return pipe, variable geometry vanes (VGT).
Petrol & diesel vehicles
Turbocharged petrol engines run at higher exhaust temperatures than diesel turbos. They require quality oil and regular oil changes to protect the turbo bearings.
Hybrid & electric vehicles
Electric vehicles do not have turbochargers. Hybrid vehicles may have a turbocharged petrol or diesel engine.
Common faults
The most common turbocharger faults we see across Bradford and West Yorkshire include: loss of power, excessive exhaust smoke (blue or black), whining or whistling noise, oil consumption increase, boost pressure fault codes, turbo lag increasing.
