Then, in 2019, Daimler formed a 50/50 joint venture with the Chinese automaker Geely, reportedly worth around $830 million, to relaunch smart as a China-built, EV-only global brand from 2022 onwards. The result is the current lineup: the smart #1 and smart #3, both battery-electric SUV and crossover models built on Geely's SEA platform. These aren't updated fortwos - they're a completely different format, four or five seats and proper boot space, sold and supported in Europe through Smart Europe GmbH in Stuttgart. Servicing to smart's own schedule, at your door

One of the advantages of an independent mobile mechanic is that you're not tied to a dealership's calendar or a dealership's prices - but that doesn't mean cutting corners on what the manufacturer actually specifies. For the Gen3 (2014+) fortwo, UK motoring press at the time quoted a service interval of 12,500 miles or once a year, whichever comes first, with dealer fixed-price servicing running around £180 a year. That's a useful benchmark for what a Gen3 smart needs, even though we'd always confirm the exact interval and oil/filter spec for your specific car and engine before we turn a spanner.

For the older W450 and W451 fortwo, and both generations of forfour, service intervals vary by engine and model year, so rather than assume they match the newer car, we check your service book and the correct manufacturer schedule for your specific vehicle. The same goes for the current smart #1 and #3 - as EVs they don't need oil changes or cambelt work in the traditional sense, but they still have a defined maintenance schedule covering things like brake fluid, coolant and safety checks, and we work to that rather than guessing.

The gearbox everyone who's owned an early fortwo talks about

If there's one thing that defines the pre-2014 fortwo in the memory of UK owners and reviewers, it's the gearbox. The Gen1 and Gen2 cars used an automated-manual transmission - marketed as "Softip" or "Softouch" - which is mechanically a manual gearbox with a computer doing the clutch and shifting for you. It's a clever idea, but it was widely and consistently reported by UK motoring press as jerky and hesitant at low speed, with a distinct pause and lurch between gears that never quite disappeared no matter how gently you drove. If your fortwo does this, you're not imagining it and it's not necessarily a fault - it's a well-documented characteristic of the model.

That said, "characteristic" doesn't mean "ignore it forever". A gearbox that's becoming noticeably worse, slipping, refusing to select a gear, or making new noises on top of the usual hesitation is worth having looked at, because a genuine fault layered on top of the normal Softip behaviour is easy to miss if you've just gotten used to living with it. The good news for later buyers: Mercedes replaced the automated-manual setup with a proper dual-clutch automatic gearbox on the Gen3 car from 2014 onwards, which shifts far more conventionally. If you're cross-shopping a pre-2014 and a post-2014 fortwo, the gearbox alone is one of the biggest differences you'll feel from the driver's seat.

Brakes, clutch and the toll of city driving

The fortwo was built to dart around town - short wheelbase, tight turning circle, easy parking - and that's exactly the kind of driving that wears certain parts out faster. UK motoring press (Autoexpress) has specifically noted that brakes and gearbox-related components on the fortwo tend to wear faster than average, and puts that down to the car's typical stop-start urban usage pattern: lots of braking, lots of low-speed clutch and gear changes, not much motorway cruising to let things cool down and settle.

If your smart has spent its life doing the school run, the supermarket run and short hops around Bradford, Shipley or Keighley, it's worth having brakes and clutch-related wear checked a bit more proactively than you might on a car that mostly does motorway miles. Worth flagging honestly: the Gen3 fortwo and forfour's three-cylinder petrol engines, developed jointly with Renault and Mercedes, were - at the time UK reviewers assessed them - relatively new to market, without the kind of long, independently proven fault history you'd get from a decades-old volume engine that's been in millions of cars. That's not a black mark against the engine; it just means the reliability picture is still evolving rather than fully written, and it's exactly why proper diagnostics matter more than assumption when something does go wrong. We approach it as an evolving picture, not a known failure pattern, and we diagnose what's actually happening in your car rather than reaching for a stock answer.

Looking after the newest smarts: the #1 and #3

If you're driving a current smart #1 or #3, you're in a very different car mechanically from the fortwo, even though it carries the same badge. These are full battery-electric SUVs and crossovers built on Geely's SEA platform, and keeping one running well means focusing on EV-specific maintenance rather than anything to do with engines, clutches or cambelts.

That means regular checks on the 12V auxiliary battery that powers everything from the infotainment to the locks (a surprisingly common cause of an EV refusing to wake up), brake fluid and coolant changes on their proper schedule even though there's no oil service to remind you, tyre wear monitoring (EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, both of which chew through tyres faster than a comparable petrol car), and checks on the regenerative braking system, which does a lot of the day-to-day stopping and needs to be working correctly alongside the conventional brakes. We don't have UK-specific service interval figures published for the #1 and #3 at this stage, so rather than assume they mirror the old fortwo's 12,500-mile pattern, we work from smart's own official service schedule for your specific car.
