KGM servicing, diagnostics and repairs

Book the vehicle, derivative and job—not a generic badge

SSK Mechanics accepts suitable KGM work across Bradford and West Yorkshire. The team confirms the registration, model, engine or powertrain, service history and symptoms before accepting specialist or workshop-dependent work.

KGM models and variants

The current make registry includes Tivoli, Korando, Torres, Rexton, Musso. This list is descriptive, not a promise that every job on every derivative can be completed mobile. Registration-specific checks decide parts, fluids, tools and the safest repair setting.

Mobile KGM mechanic in Bradford and West Yorkshire

You won't find many mobile mechanics who'll talk you through the history of your own car's badge. We will. If you drive a KGM, chances are you've had a few conversations already explaining that no, it's not a brand-new Korean carmaker that's popped up out of nowhere, and yes, it's the same company that's been building your Korando, Musso or Rexton for years - just under a different name.

SSK Mechanics is a mobile mechanic based in Bradford, covering the wider West Yorkshire area including Leeds, Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield and everywhere in between. We come to your home or workplace with the tools and know-how to service, diagnose and repair KGM vehicles, from the diesel-engined SsangYong models that first brought the brand to the UK to the newest hybrid and electric models rolling off the current range. No garage visit, no half-day off work sat in a dealer waiting room - just a qualified, insured technician turning up where your car already is.

KGM: a new name, not a new company

Here's the bit worth knowing if you're new to the brand or shopping for a used one. KGM stands for KG Mobility, and it's the current name for what used to be called SsangYong Motor. The rebrand was completed in March 2023 - a decision driven by the company's new owner, Korea's KG Group, wanting a clean break from some of the baggage the SsangYong name had picked up over a turbulent few decades.

And turbulent is the word. SsangYong was founded back in 1954, took the SsangYong name in 1988, and then passed through a string of different owners - Daewoo in 1997, China's SAIC in 2004, and India's Mahindra & Mahindra from 2011 - before the Korean KG Group took control in 2022 and relaunched the business as KGM the following year. In some export markets, like Australia and Turkey, you'll still see the SsangYong name used alongside KGM. In the UK, KGM is now the official marque.

What that means practically is this: KGM is a new badge on the outside, but there's real UK history underneath it. SsangYong vehicles have been sold and serviced in this country for decades, so there's a genuine base of ownership experience, parts knowledge and mechanical familiarity behind the name - it's not a brand-new entrant with zero track record here. It's also fair to say KGM is a low-volume brand in UK terms. You won't see it topping the new-car sales charts alongside the mainstream names, and that has a knock-on effect worth being upfront about: independent, published reliability data for SsangYong and KGM models is much thinner than you'd find for a VW, a Ford or a BMW. We'd rather tell you that honestly than invent statistics that don't exist, or claim to know about "common faults" that haven't actually been documented anywhere credible.

A brand that spans two very different eras

One of the more interesting things about working on KGMs is that you're never just working on one type of car. The badge covers a genuinely wide spread of vehicles, old and new, diesel and electric, and a mobile mechanic who only knows one end of that range isn't much use to you.

On the older side, you've got the SsangYong-era models that are still very much on West Yorkshire roads: the Korando (a compact SUV that's been through several generations since its badge was revived), the Rexton (a body-on-frame large SUV - the first generation used a re-engineered Mercedes-Benz-derived 2.7 XDi diesel, while the second generation from 2017 moved to a 2.2-litre e-XDi Euro 6 diesel shared with the Musso pickup, paired with either a Mercedes 7G-Tronic or Aisin automatic gearbox), the Musso pickup itself, the Tivoli and Tivoli XLV compact SUVs (a genuinely strong seller in its class when launched in 2015), the Kyron mid-size SUV from the mid-to-late 2000s, and the Turismo large MPV. These are honest, practical vehicles with a following among owners who value towing capability and value for money over ride refinement - road testers have criticised the handling and interior feel of some generations, but that's a comfort complaint, not a reliability one.

On the newer side, the current KGM range has moved a long way in a short time. You've got the Tivoli, the Torres (offered as a Torres Hybrid and as the fully electric Torres EVX), the Actyon Hybrid, the Rexton (including a Rexton Commercial van derivative), and the Musso pickup range which now spans diesel, the Musso Rhino, and a fully electric Musso EV. That's diesel, petrol-hybrid and full electric all sitting under one badge at the same time - which is unusual, and means the servicing knowledge a KGM owner needs can be quite different depending on which end of the range their car sits.

Worth flagging too: KGM backs its current new-vehicle range with a 5-year warranty, noticeably longer than the 3-year cover most mainstream brands offer. If your KGM is still within that period, a lot of work should rightly go through the manufacturer network to protect the warranty. Where a mobile independent mechanic like us genuinely earns its keep is once that warranty's run out, or on any of the older used SsangYong-era cars that were never covered by it in the first place - which, realistically, is where most of the KGM and SsangYong cars on the road today actually sit.

Servicing built around your actual car

We service KGM and SsangYong vehicles to the standard your manufacturer schedule expects, whether that's an interim service between MOTs or a full annual service covering fluids, filters, brakes, suspension components and the wider mechanical health of the car. Book through our online booking page, pop in your registration, and you'll get an instant, itemised quote before we arrange anything - no guessing, no surprise charges when the van turns up.

For the older diesel Rexton and Kyron-era cars, that servicing knowledge genuinely matters. Those first-generation models used Mercedes-Benz-derived engine and automatic gearbox hardware, and understanding how that era of Mercedes diesel and transmission engineering behaves - what it needs, what it doesn't like, how it ages - is a real, useful specialism rather than a marketing line. For the current-generation Rexton, Musso and Korando running the shared 2.2-litre e-XDi Euro 6 diesel, the service points that matter are the ones common to any modern diesel SUV: keeping the DPF regenerating properly, EGR valve cleanliness, and making sure the AdBlue and wider emissions system stays healthy. None of that is unique to KGM - it's standard modern-diesel maintenance - but it does need doing properly, and it's exactly the sort of thing that gets missed if a car sits unused for short trips only.

Full details of what our servicing covers are on our servicing page, and if you're not sure which level of service your car is due, give us a call on 01274 442192 and we'll talk you through it.

Diagnostics that actually understand the platform

Modern KGMs, like any modern car, run on a network of electronic systems that need the right diagnostic approach rather than guesswork. Our diagnostic service covers everything from warning light investigation to deeper fault-finding on engine management, emissions and electrical systems, whether your KGM is a fifteen-year-old diesel Kyron or a brand-new Torres EVX.

The diagnostic picture looks quite different depending on which part of the range you're driving. On the older diesel models, most of what comes up relates to fairly conventional diesel-SUV territory - sensor faults, emissions system warnings, electrical gremlins that are common to any car of that age rather than anything specific to the badge. On the newer hybrid and electric KGMs - the Torres Hybrid, Actyon Hybrid, Torres EVX and Musso EV - the honest answer is that these models are still quite new to UK roads, so there isn't yet a body of documented fault history to draw on in the way there is for older, higher-volume EVs. What we do bring is solid general knowledge of how hybrid and EV systems behave day to day: 12V auxiliary battery health (which causes more hybrid and EV no-start problems than people expect), brake fluid and coolant condition on electric drivetrains, high-voltage battery health checks, wear patterns linked to regenerative braking, and the faster-than-average tyre wear that comes with an EV's instant torque. That's genuine, transferable EV and hybrid maintenance knowledge applied properly to your specific car, not invented brand-specific fault codes.

Brakes, clutch, engine and the rest

Beyond servicing and diagnostics, we cover the full range of mechanical work a KGM or SsangYong owner is likely to need. That includes brakes, clutch replacement on the manual-gearbox models, engine repairs, gearbox and transmission work (including the automatic gearboxes fitted across the Rexton and Musso ranges), suspension, steering, exhaust, cooling system, electrical and battery work, air conditioning, fuel system, turbocharger, wheel bearings and driveshaft and CV joint work.

Body-on-frame SUVs and pickups like the Rexton and Musso carry a fair bit of weight, tow trailers and horseboxes, and get used off-road more often than the average family hatchback - all of which puts real, honest wear on suspension bushes, wheel bearings and brakes over time. If your KGM's had a hard life on farm tracks or towing regularly, that's exactly the kind of wear-and-tear work we see most often, and it's usually straightforward to diagnose and fix without needing to book a dealer slot weeks in advance.

We also handle bodywork and can arrange nationwide recovery if your KGM's broken down somewhere and needs bringing home rather than fixing on the spot.

Weighing up dealer versus mobile independent

Because KGM is a low-volume brand, the dealer network isn't as dense as it is for mainstream manufacturers, which can mean a longer drive and a longer wait to get a slot booked in - particularly if you're calling from somewhere in West Yorkshire rather than sat right next to a KGM showroom. A mobile independent mechanic doesn't have that problem, because we come to you rather than the other way round.

We won't pretend an independent garage is always cheaper than a franchise dealer on every single job - that depends on the part, the labour involved and what's actually wrong. What we can promise is transparent, itemised pricing worked out from your car's actual registration before any work starts, so you know exactly what you're paying for and why. There's no vague estimate that turns into a bigger bill once the car's up on the ramp. You get the number, you decide whether to go ahead, and only then do we start work.

If your KGM is still under that 5-year manufacturer warranty, it's worth checking whether a particular job needs to go through an approved dealer to keep the warranty intact - we'll always tell you honestly if that's the case rather than taking work we shouldn't. Once you're out of warranty, though, there's no requirement to go back to a franchise dealer for servicing or repairs, and that's where using a qualified, insured independent mobile mechanic genuinely makes sense: same quality of work, without the dealer overheads, and without the car ever leaving your driveway.

Frequently asked questions

Is KGM the same as SsangYong?

Yes. KGM (KG Mobility) is the current name for SsangYong Motor, following a rebrand completed in March 2023 after Korea's KG Group took control of the company. It's a new badge, not a new manufacturer - so servicing knowledge built on SsangYong models carries straight across.

Do you work on older SsangYong models as well as new KGMs?

Yes. We regularly work on Korando, Rexton, Musso, Tivoli and Kyron models alongside the current KGM range, including the newer Torres Hybrid, Torres EVX, Actyon Hybrid and Musso EV. Book through our booking page with your registration and we'll confirm we've got everything needed for your specific model.

My KGM is still under the 5-year warranty - can you still work on it?

We can carry out most maintenance and repair work, but if a job needs to stay within manufacturer warranty terms, we'll tell you honestly rather than risk it. Many of our KGM and SsangYong customers come to us once that cover has run out, or for older used models that were never under it.

How do I get a price for my KGM before booking?

Enter your registration on our booking page and you'll get an instant, itemised quote before anything is arranged. No guesswork, no surprises once the technician arrives.

Which areas do you cover for KGM servicing and repairs?

We're based in Bradford and cover the wider West Yorkshire district, including Leeds, Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield and the towns and villages between. See our coverage page for full detail, or call us on 01274 442192.
